Available Courses

Several different handgun training courses are available to PSC Shooting Club, Inc.  All courses are open to both Club Members and non-members.  Click on any of the courses listed below for a description of the course.  Courses currently on the PSC Calendar are set out in the columns to the right.

Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC) Class:

This is the class required in order to obtain a Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC).  It consists of four hours of classroom instruction, plus a shooting proficiency demonstration on the range.  The time on the range varies depending upon the size of the class and  the experience level of the students.  The total class time is approximately 5.5 hours.

Combined LTC & Basic Handgun Skills Class:

This is a class that combines the Texas License to Carry a Handgun Class (LTC) with the Basic Handgun Skills Course (BHS) described below.  This class begins with the 3-hour BHS Class, followed by a lunch break, then the LTC Class.  This is a very popular class for people with little to no handgun experience.  Students shoot the LTC range qualification as the last shooting drill in the BHS portion of the class.  They then have a one hour lunch break and return for the classroom portion of the course.

Handgun Skills Series (HSS):

The Handgun Skills Series of courses was designed to provide training for people with varying levels of handgun experience.  The courses are building blocks and each is a prerequisite for the more advanced courses.  Waivers are available for people who do not need the Basic Handgun Skills Class and want to take Intermediate Handgun Skills I.  The courses are described below.  One of the key features of the HSS courses is the pairing of students and using a Coach/Shooter approach to training.  A student not only learns the course material, they learn how to help their shooting partner correct mistakes and hone their skills.  The classes cannot turn students into firearms instructors in three hours, but they do learn how to spot and correct common mistakes and poor techniques.  This equips students to practice with a shooting buddy so they can help each other during their own practice/training sessions.

Basic Handgun Skills Course:

This course is designed for people with little or no handgun experience. Students focus on pistol shooting fundamentals including proper grip, sight alignment/sight picture, and trigger control. Mastering these basic skill requirements is critical to developing sufficient proficiency with a handgun to safely and effectively employ it in a defensive shooting situation.  Unless a waver is granted, this course is a prerequisite for the Intermediate Handgun Skills I Course.

A holster is not required for the Basic Handgun Skills Course, but the student should bring one to class, if they have a holster for the handgun they will be using.

Ammo required: 200 rounds minimum.
Class duration:  3 hrs.
Class Size:  Maximum 10 students
Class Fee:  $125 ($99 for PSC Members & family)

Intermediate I Handgun Skills Course:
The 3 hour Intermediate I Handgun Skills Course covers drawing and engaging from a holster and engaging one or more targets and malfunction drills.

A "good" holster and gun belt are required for this course, even if you are going to carry a handgun in a purse or fanny pack.  Do not buy a holster that closes when you draw your handgun, thus requiring you to open the holster with your weak hand before reholstering.  There are many good holster manufacturers, including Comp-Tac a local company with great customer service and excellent delivery times.  Students carrying a handgun in a purse or fanny pack will spend some time covering issues related to this method of carrying a defensive handgun, but the shooting portion of the class will involve only the use of a holster.

Prerequisite:  Basic Handgun Skills Course or equivalent, unless waived.  To request a waiver, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Ammo Required:  200 rds minimum
Class duration:  3 hrs.

Class Size:  Maximum 10 students
Class Fee:  $125 ($99 for PSC Members & family)

Intermediate II Handgun Skills Course:
The 3 hour Intermediate II Handgun Skills Course covers drawing and engaging from a holster and engaging one or more targets, shooting on the move, use of cover and malfunction drills.

Prerequisite:  Basic Handgun Skills: Intermediate I
Ammo Required:  200 rds minimum
Class duration:  3 hrs.

Class Size:  Maximum 10 students
Class Fee:  $125 ($99 for PSC Members & family)

Advanced I Handgun Skills Course (AH I):
This course introduces the use of barricades and other cover, shooting moving targets,  shooting from unusual positions and advanced malfunction/incapacitation drills. Students will hone the skills they learned in the first three courses by employing them in realistic scenarios.  Standing still and shooting at stationary targets is useful for training, but only to a point.  There comes a point when every person carrying a defensive handgun must practice under more realistic conditions

Prerequisite:  Basic Handgun Skills: Intermediate I & II or waiver
Ammo Required:  200 rds minimum
Class duration:  3 hrs.

Class Size:  Maximum 8 students
Class Fee:  $125 ($99 for PSC Members & family)

Advanced II Handgun Skills Course (AH II):
This course builds on the skills learned in AH I and takes  the students performance to a higher level.  Greater stress is placed on the student forcing them to perform under pressure to better simulate a real life-or-death event.  Students will also receive instruction in a "shoot house."

Prerequisite:  Basic Handgun Skills: Intermediate I & II and Advanced or waiver, and I Handgun Skills.
Ammo Required:  200 rds minimum
Class duration:  3 hrs.

Class Size:  Maximum 8 students
Class Fee:  $125 ($99 for PSC Members & family)

NOTE:  Advanced I & II Handgun Skills Courses are not being scheduled until further notice.

Bacis Revolver:

The popularity of the semi-automatic handgun has caused a significant decline in the use of revolvers for sport shooting or self-defense.  This is in spite of the fact that many people with a Texas License to Carry a Handgun carry revolvers, often small, easy-to-conceal, five-shot revolvers.

This 3 hour Basic Revolver Course covers drawing and engaging from a holster and engaging one or more targets, speed reloading, and close-range target engagement.  This is NOT a course for people with no handgun experience. People with little or no handgun experience should take the Basic Handgun Skills Course before taking the Basic Revolver Course.

A "good" holster and gun belt are required for this course.  Do not buy a holster that closes when you draw your handgun, thus requiring you to open the holster with your weak hand before reholstering.  There are many good holster manufacturers, including Comp-Tac a local company with great customer service and excellent delivery times.

Prerequisite:  Basic Handgun Skills or recent prior handgun shooting experience
Ammo Required:  100 rds minimum
Class duration:  3 hrs.
Class Size:  Maximum 10 students
Class Fee:  $125 ($99 for PSC Members & family)

NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home:

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.  It is an eight-hour course in which students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course.

Fee:  PSC Members & family $150, Non-Members $175.

NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home:

This course is comprehensive and intensive in its approach to equip the defensive shooting candidate with the skills needed to survive serious adversity. It teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home. Students have the opportunity to attend this course using a quality strong side hip holster that covers the trigger, or a holster purse. From a review of safe firearms handling and proper mindset to presentation from concealment and multiple shooting positions, this course contains the essential skills and techniques needed to prevail in a life-threatening situation.

The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home is divided into two levels (basic and advanced). Level one is a nine-hour course and offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Upon completion of level one, students may choose to attend level two, which is an additional five hours of range training and teaches advanced shooting skills.

After the classroom portion, students should expect to spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during level one. Level two involves five additional hours on the range and approximately 115 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition requirements are minimum and may be exceeded. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the appropriate course completion certificates(s), NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home (identifies strong-side hip holster or purse use) certificate, and NRA Advanced Personal Protection Outside The Home certificate.

The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home is for adult individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law and are of good repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics of Personal Protection In The Home Course. Participants must also understand the basic legal concepts relating to the use of firearms in self-defense, and must know and observe not only general gun safety rules, but also those safety principles that are specific to defensive situations. Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course Certificate.

NOTE:  Students in all PPOH courses will use strong side belt holsters.  No purses, fanny packs or shoulder holsters can be used in this course.  Special training in drawing and engaging from these items are available.

Fee:  PSC Members & family $175, Non-Members $200.
